The 2 beliefs that are keeping you exhausted

If you're a people pleaser, I want you to know something before we dive in:

You didn't wake up one day and decide to abandon yourself.

Somewhere along the way, your nervous system learned that staying connected meant staying useful. That love felt safer when you were easy to love, easy to need, and easy to rely on.

Those beliefs weren't born because something is wrong with you.

They were an attempt to protect you.

The problem is that what once helped you feel safe may now be keeping you stuck.

In this week's episode of Inner Work with MaryAnn Walker, we're exploring two beliefs that many people pleasers spend years—sometimes decades—trying to prove.

1: "You need me."

If people need you, maybe they'll stay.

Maybe you'll matter.

Maybe you'll finally feel secure in the relationship.

So you become the helper, the fixer, the one who anticipates everyone's needs before they even have to ask. You carry emotional loads that were never yours to carry because somewhere inside, it feels safer to be indispensable than simply loved.

The second belief is just as painful:

2: "I don't have needs."

Because if having needs feels like being too much...

If asking for help feels selfish...

If you've learned that your needs come last...

Then pretending you don't have any can feel like the safest option.

But living this way is exhausting.

It creates relationships where you're always giving but rarely receiving. You begin to wonder why you feel so unseen, so lonely, and so burned out, even though you're doing everything you can to love the people around you.

The heartbreaking part is that neither of these beliefs creates the closeness you're longing for.

They often create the very imbalance that's causing your pain.

In this episode, we'll gently explore where these beliefs come from, why they make so much sense, and how you can begin replacing them with beliefs that allow you to experience love without constantly proving your worth.

Because your value has never been determined by how needed you are.

And having needs doesn't make you difficult to love.

It makes you human.

I hope you'll listen to this episode with compassion for yourself. These patterns aren't a sign that you've failed—they're an invitation to heal.

And if you're ready to dive deeper, simply reply to this email to book your free peace and healing call. I only over 2 of these calls per week, so reply now to secure your spot and let's see how coaching might support you.

I'm so grateful you're here.

With love,

But what if it didn’t have to be that way? This time of year has a way of waking up invisible shoulds and...

So many highly sensitive people and recovering people-pleasers reach a point where they...

MaryAnn Walker Coaching Hey there, friend. I hope you had a warm and meaningful Thanksgiving—whether yours was big and bustling or quiet and reflective. This time of year always reminds me how healing it can be to pause, take a breath, and truly let ourselves feel gratitude. And as I was recording this week’s podcast episode with my guest, Natalie King, I was struck by how beautifully gratitude and joy weave into each other. Natalie and I had the most powerful conversation about joy—how we...
