The 5 Most Commonly Asked Questions From Empaths

What you really want to know:

I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine who is going through a major life event. As is usually the case, this brought up a lot for her.

When we are feeling good about things we are able to go navigate life without a lot of struggle. But when something happens that seems to pull the rug out of us, it can bring up a lot of questions.

This friend had some profound questions about what it means to be an empath, and I realized these are questions many of you might be asking too. So let me address the five most commonly asked questions I receive from empaths:

  1. Why do random people open up to me, even strangers?
    • Calming and Soothing Energy: Empaths and highly sensitive people often emit a calming presence, making others feel more at ease around them.
    • Non-Judgmental Nature: People feel safe sharing with you because they sense your accepting and tolerant nature, knowing they won't be judged.
    • Intuitive Responses: Your intuitive nature helps you know exactly what the other person needs to hear, which makes them feel truly seen and heard.
  2. How can I ground and center myself after holding space for others?
    • Wash Your Hands or Take a Shower: Visualize the other person's energy sliding off of you.
    • Come Back into Your Own Body: Use breathwork or focus on one body part at a time to reconnect with yourself.
    • Spend Time in Nature: Engage all 5 senses as you observe the world around you.
  3. I'm great and helping others to process. So why is it that I sometimes feel emotionally constipated myself?
    • Prioritizing Others' Emotions: Empaths often put their own emotions on the back burner while helping others, which can lead to feeling emotionally blocked.
    • Journaling and Mental Processing: Take some time to journal or mentally process your emotions, and get curious about what they feel like in your body.
  4. How can I set energetic boundaries ahead of time?
    • One-Way Mirror Visualization: Imagine yourself in a one-way mirror that reflects back others' experiences without absorbing them.
    • Ground and Shield: Take time for self-care both before and after interactions. Spend time in nature both before and after an emotional exchange.
    • Be Intentional: Remember that when you say "yes" to something, you're also saying "no" to something else at the same time. Be intentional about saying "yes" to the things that sustain you. This includes sleep, nutrition, and time in nature.
  5. How can I create safety for myself?
    • Limit Social Media: Unfollow or snooze people who trigger you.
    • Plan Conversations: Think ahead about how to redirect or avoid uncomfortable topics.
    • Physical and Emotional Safety: Make changes in your physical environment and social interactions to enhance your sense of safety and security.

You Are Not Alone

MaryAnn Walker Coaching Have you ever expected something to go one way… and then it unfolded completely differently?Maybe opinions clashed. Food got burned. Or the weather didn’t cooperate. Too often, we allow the things that weren’t “supposed” to happen to dictate how we feel and how we show up in the world. And when that happens, we end up feeling like a victim of our circumstances. But what if it didn’t have to be that way? This time of year has a way of waking up invisible shoulds and...

So many highly sensitive people and recovering people-pleasers reach a point where they...

MaryAnn Walker Coaching Hey there, friend. I hope you had a warm and meaningful Thanksgiving—whether yours was big and bustling or quiet and reflective. This time of year always reminds me how healing it can be to pause, take a breath, and truly let ourselves feel gratitude. And as I was recording this week’s podcast episode with my guest, Natalie King, I was struck by how beautifully gratitude and joy weave into each other. Natalie and I had the most powerful conversation about joy—how we...
